Established in 1994, this Department was formerly known as the Electric Communication Engineering Division, Penghu sub-division of Kaohsiung Marine and Fishery Senior Vocational School that used to recruit Two-year Daytime College Degree students. In July 1, 1995, it became an independent Electric Communication Engineering Division of National Penghu University of Maritime College. In 2000, the school was permitted to reorganize and renamed as National Penghu Institute of Technology. In 2002, the Department reorganized to name as Department of Communication Engineering to recruit Four-year Daytime Technical Degree students, and was evaluated as First Grade in Teaching and Research Performance by the Ministry of Education then. Currently, it only enrolls one class in each grade.
This Department is full of highly qualified teachers and well-equipped with advanced equipment, and it adopts an educational philosophy of “paying equal emphasis on theory and practice, and equal balance in humanity and technological aspects.” It offers curricula in electrical and electronic related fields to highlight two major directions of communication and digital signal processing technology and RF and microwave engineering. It has also mutually integrated with computer and network technologies for wireless communication and AI applications to enhance the practical abilities of students. The professional laboratories are open at fixed hours in the evening to allow students to use them freely, helping them to gain solid and diversified learning opportunities to prepare for a successful development regardless in further studies or employment.
This Department has set up an Institute by integrating with the school’s Electrical and Information Department, and began to recruit students in the 2008 academic year. Its long-term goal is to emphasize the two existing professional courses, hoping to become a center to cultivate talents and provision of technological knowledge.
The Electronics Laboratory provides students to perform relevant experiments on electronic circuits. Students can verify the theoretical knowledge learned in electronic circuit courses through the practical processes to enhance their practical capabilities and experience. Apart from serving as a classroom in teaching “Electronics Practices” curriculum, the laboratory normally also provides students to engage in special topic preparing and researching related to electronic circuits.
The Thematic Laboratory is equipped with circuit boards, circuit components, circuit engraving machine, circuit board lamination machine and circuit fabrication worktables, etc. to help students to do the comprehensive circuit fabrication. This includes circuit design, antenna fabrication or thematic circuit fabrication, thematic antenna fabrication, etc. needed in the usual school curricula (Microwave Circuit Practices, Antenna theory and applications), etc.
Digital Laboratory (including digital signal processing) was formerly known as Microprocessor and Interface Laboratory being established in 1997. Due to curricula changes in 2003 in response to Four-year Technology Degree enrollment, it was renamed as Digital Laboratory. After additional procurement of digital signal processing hardware and software year after year, the Digital Laboratory had nearly installed all its equipment in 2006 to provide digital electronics, computer interface hardware and digital signal processing chips and other relevant practices. The laboratory is applicable in relevant curricula of “Digital Logic Design Practices” and “Thematic Practices,” etc.
The Communication Laboratory aims to provide various types of simulation software for use in analysis and design purposes. In addition to communication simulation software, it also offers high-frequency or general low-frequency circuit simulation software. The laboratory is applicable in relevant curricula of “Communication System Practices,” “Microwave Circuits,” “RF Circuit Design,” “Numerical Analysis” and “Thematic Practices,” etc.
The Broadband Communication Laboratory is currently equipped 12 high-order computers and two computer racks to provide theoretical analysis and simulation while conducting broadband communication time-consuming practices.
The Microwave Laboratory aims to provide high-frequency or microwave circuits measurement, and relevant experiment module equipment required in conducting communication experiments. The circuits designed in the Communication Laboratory can be fabricated and their characteristics measured in this laboratory. The laboratory is applicable in relevant curricula of “Microwave Circuits,” “Circuits of Communication Electronic,” “Thematic Practices,” etc.
Completed in 2002, it is a fully anechoic chamber with isolation effect, measuring 7.3m in length and 3.7m in height. It contains a test turntable of diameter 1.2m equipped with 3D antenna pattern measurement capability to provide antenna and wireless transceiver circuit measurements in an applicable frequency range of 0.7 ~ 18GHz. This equipment can be used to measure the transmitting and receiving characteristics of wireless circuits or antennas fabricated in the Microwave Laboratory. The laboratory is applicable in relevant curricula of “Antenna theory and applications,” “Thematic Practices,” etc.
The purpose of Communication Technology Laboratory is a collaboration to consult in the certification course of “Communication Technology” to help students to obtain Grade B and Grade C Communication Technology (Telecommunication Circuits) License Practicum. It is equipped with 12 stations and an ancillary equipment room.
